Located in the coveted Hudson Bayou neighborhood in Sarasota, this project for a young family began as a small addition and transformed into a complete interior and exterior renovation of the existing structure on the property. The existing home was built in 1955 and had been added on to a number of times over the years, resulting in an odd interior layout that was riddled with inefficiencies. After analyzing the structure, we focused on bringing clarity to the various roofs and simplifying the massing. Programmatically, we divided the public and private spaces of the home along a central circulation spine which is punctuated by double height spaces at the entry and the focal courtyard of the backyard. After splitting a traditional gable form down the ridge line of the roof, the masses slide past each other to emphasize entry and create visibility to the back courtyard and pool. With budget and efficiency in mind, floor to ceiling glass is used judiciously in the primary public spaces of the home. This glazing is combined with selective use of vaulted ceilings in the dining room and living room, expressing the sloped roofs above. At the rear courtyard, the exterior cladding turns into a cantilevered slatted screen wall. Playing with opacity and transparency in this way allows a simple material like exterior cladding to transform into a focal point of a project.
